William Monks

William was born in 1892, the son of William and Mary Walton Monks. He was baptised at All Saints’, Daresbury on 19 June 1892. William had one brother, Gilbert b1890. The family lived at 61 Sankey Street, Warrington, where William had a grocer’s shop, specialising in fine teas and coffee.

By 1911, the family had moved from Warrington to Moore, where they lived in ‘The Grange’. William was a grocer’s assistant and presumably worked for his father.

William enlisted into the 6th Dragoons, but by the end of the war was a 2nd lieutenant in the 12th Royal Lancers. The regiment served in France.

After the war, William returned home. His father died in 1929 and it can be assumed that William took over the business. Whether the shop was still in Sankey Street is unknown, but by 1939, he had his own grocer’s shop in Moore, at 121 Runcorn Road, where he lived.

In 1940, William married Sarah Ellen Priestner, from Canal Side Farm, Moore. They had no children.

William died in 1953, aged 60 years. Sarah died 16 years later.
