Herbert was born around 1887 in Aston Heath and was the son of John and Edith Ann Dean. They lived with Herbert’s grandfather, James Dean. Herbert worked as a joiner. In 1909-10 season he had played for Aston Hall Reserve AFC along with several lads from the village.
Herbert enlisted as a private in the Cheshire Regiment (number 27436) on the 26th July 1915 and died on the 5th November 1915. He was posthumously awarded the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
