Reverend William Loyd Musgrave Protheroe was born on 30 November 1884 in Mold, Flintshire, to Reverend William Loyd Protheroe, curate of Mold, and his wife, Alice Laura Musgrave.
He moved to Liverpool sometime after completing his education and was living in Garston in 1911.
In 1914 he boarded the “banana boat” TSS Changuinola at Avonmouth for a round trip to Jamaica, Costa Rica and Panama. Although he was on holiday for this trip, he served as a guest chaplain on board for the journey.
It was around this time that he was curate of Aigburth
In World War 1 he served as an army chaplain, and was present at the Salonica Theatre of Operations in Greece, and he received the Croix de Guerre medal.
Following the war, he returned home to Liverpool and became the Vicar of St John, Bootle, and in 1920 he married Ida Morgan at the Parish Church of Colwyn Bay, and their son William Loyd Protheroe was born the following year in Liverpool, followed in 1922 by a daughter, Shelia.
He was the Vicar of St Nicholas, Halewood, from 1935 until 1938, when he came to Daresbury.
At the outbreak of WW2 he volunteered as an Air Raid Warden and member of the Home Guard, alongside his son. Tragically his son was killed in action in 1942.
He was made an honorary Canon of Chester Cathedral in 1953, and retired to Devon in 1955, remaining there until his death on 30 Sep 1962
