Douglas Goodwin Clarke was born on 27th May 1925 at Preston Brook, the son of James Alexander Clarke and Hilda May (nee Lightfoot). The father was from Glasgow, and the mother was born at Newton by Daresbury.
Douglas had an older brother called William Alexander Sydney, who would also serve in World War Two, and an older sister called Margaret Winifred.
The 1939 Register recorded the family as living on Canalside in Preston Brook and Douglas was seeking work as he had left school. His father was working as a County Council roadman but had sadly been widowed the year before when Hilda May had passed away.
Douglas served in the Royal Army Service Corps in World War Two, as a Corporal and Driver, with the service number T/14646855. It is not known where he served. After the war ended, he was recorded on the Electoral Roll Service Register for Preston Brook for October 1946 as being absent from home as a member of the forces. He was demobbed at Thetford in Norfolk.
In July 1947 Douglas married Irene Kenwright, who was from Walton near Warrington, and they would eventually have two children.
Douglas trained as a policeman after the war, serving from 1951 and transferring to Poynton in November 1955. He retired in 1978.
In his retirement he became chairman of the local parish council and a school governor.
Douglas’ father had passed away in 1973.
Douglas Goodwin Clarke passed away in the Macclesfield area on 11th October 2001, and his wife Irene passed away in 2019.
