Frank Barker Hindmarch was born on 29th April 1900 at Preston on the Hill, the son of Philip Barker Hindmarch and Agnes Elizabeth (nee Swain). The father was from County Durham, and the mother was from Derbyshire. At the time of his birth, Frank’s father was working as a clerk for the Manchester Ship Canal company, having previously worked as an Assistant Schoolmaster at Dutton Workhouse.
The 1901 census recorded the family as living on the Bridgewater Canal Bank, Preston on the Hill. They moved to Birmingham for a few years in the 1900s and then emigrated to Canada in 1907. A daughter called Phyllis Una was born in 1909 but sadly died that same year.
Frank’s father was in the Militia in Canada before World War One and his mother worked as a waitress, living with Frank at the Albion Hotel in
Sherbrooke, Montreal. His father also served in World War One.
When Frank tried to enlist for war service on May 26th 1917, at Montreal, he gave his date of birth as 29th April 1899 instead of 1900, but this error was not noticed, and his attestation was accepted for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force. He was sent to England in July 1917, but some months later the error was noticed, and it was ordered that he was not to go overseas from England until he was 19 years old. He was noted as an electrician by trade.
Frank joined the 7th Brigade of the Canadian Field Artillery and served in Canada and England. He was a Gunner with the service number of 2152499.
He was demobilised on 21st December 1918.
Sadly, his father died in 1919 and his mother in 1921.
Frank married Vivian Marian Oughtred of Quebec on 8 th January 1926 and they had one son Philip Barker Hindmarch born in 1933.
Frank Barker Hindmarch passed away in 1975 in London, Ontario and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in that place. His wife died ten
years later.
