Ernest Sydney Green was born on 13th March 1897 at Edmonton in London, the son of Henry Green and Emma Ada (nee Tomlinson). The father was a stereotyper/printer. Both parents were born in London.
The 1901 Census recorded the family as living at 16, Gilpin Grove in Edmonton. Ernest had two older siblings, Henry and George, and two younger siblings, Florence and Charles.
Sadly, Ernest’s father died in 1903. Ernest’s mother re-married a few years later to a William Hill and had three more children. They continued to live in London.
Ernest was in H. M. Forces during World War One, as was recorded on his marriage certificate for 26th December 1917 at St Peter’s in Edmonton. He married Elizabeth Ann Sumner, the daughter of Alfred and Emily Ann Sumner of Little Leigh in Cheshire. It is not known how he met Elizabeth Ann. Her mother was originally from Preston Brook.
Military records show that Ernest probably served as a private in the East Kent Regiment and then in the East Surrey regiment (The Buffs) between 1915 and 1919.
It is not known when Ernest and Elizabeth Ann Green moved to live in Cheshire, but their son Alfred Sydney was born in Little Leigh in 1919 and by 1921 the couple were living on Chapel Lane in Bartington, near Little Leigh, with other members of the Sumner family. Ernest had been employed as a general labourer at Brunner Mond in Winnington near Northwich but was out of work at that time. In 1924 the couple had another son called William.
By the 1930s the Green family were living in Preston on the Hill and Ernest was a labourer for a public works contractor, as was recorded in the 1939 Register.
Ernest served as a Private in the Royal Pioneer Corps, with service number 13011112, in World War Two. The RPC carried out light engineering and manual labour to support combat troops in dangerous situations. He was awarded the 1939-45 Star and the War Medal for his war service.
Ernest Sydney Green passed away in spring 1958 and was buried on 2nd April of that year at St Michael’s in Little Leigh. His wife Elizabeth Ann passed away in 1979.
