Elisha George Sydney Anthony

Elisha George Sydney Anthony was born in 1905 at Ludlow, Shropshire.  He was the only child of James Sydney and Alice Emily Anthony (nee Sawyer).  Both parents were born in the Ludlow area.

In 1911 the census recorded the family as living at 64, Corve Street in Ludlow.  The father was employed as a groom at a steam laundry, looking after the horse(s) which pulled the laundry’s vehicles.  It is most likely that the company was the Ludlow Steam Laundry, which was situated in the same street as the Anthonys lived in.  However, the company went into liquidation in 1922 and this may have been when the family moved to Cheshire.

Sadly, Elisha’s mother died in 1929 aged 47 years.

In early 1939 Elisha married his first wife, Margaret Goddard and they lived in Hatton Lane in Hatton.  Elisha’s widowed father James also lived with them.  Elisha was employed as a highways painter and James as a farm carter.

It is not known which of the armed services Elisha served in during WW2 but he was recorded as still being absent from home on the Service Register for May 1945.

Sadly, Margaret Anthony died in the summer of 1945 on the Wirral at the age of 37 years.  It is not thought that the couple had any children.

A year later Elisha married his second wife, Maggie Lafferty, who was from Whitley Superior.  It is not thought that they had any children.

Elisha’s father died in 1957 and his wife Maggie in 1972.

Elisha George Sydney Anthony passed away in 1979 at the age of 73 years.
