Douglas Goodwin Clarke was born on 27th May 1925 at Preston Brook, the son of James Alexander Clarke and Hilda May (nee Lightfoot). The father was from Glasgow and the mother was born at Newton by Daresbury.
Douglas had an older brother called William Alexander Sydney, who would also serve in World War Two, and an older sister called Margaret Winifred.
The 1939 Register recorded the family as living on Canalside in Preston Brook and Douglas was seeking work as he had left school. His father was working as a County Council roadman but had sadly been widowed the year before when Hilda May had passed away.
In July 1947 Douglas married Irene Kenwright, who was from Walton near Warrington, and they would eventually have two children.
Douglas’ father passed away in 1973.
Douglas Goodwin Clarke passed away in the Macclesfield area on 11th October 2001 and his wife Irene passed away in 2019.
It is not known in which branch of H.M. Forces Douglas served, but he appeared on the Electoral Roll Service Register for October 1946 as being absent from home as a member of the forces. His address was given as 19, Canalside in Preston Brook.
